What’s New in eCommerce: Trends in Digital and Mobile Retail

This week at Jazva, we look at some of the top ecommerce trends and news that might affect your business. We’ll talk about the new Google Adwords, spikes in online shopping and shifts toward mobile sales.

Google Adwords Receives Major Overhauls

If you use Google Adwords to power your search engine marketing, you’ll want to know that Google is revamping their interface to improve ad delivery. Google Adwords has provided paid search advertising for countless retailers across the globe for more than 15 years.

The redesign will focus on specific marketing goals, such as driving customers to physical stores, leading consumers to a merchant’s website, or having the viewer download a mobile app.

Mobile Takes Over eCommerce in China

Ecommerce is rapidly shifting towards mobile in China. According to a report from Analysys International Enfodesk, almost two thirds of all ecommerce purchases were made from a mobile device.

From barely 10% in 2013, Chinese mobile sales have spiked to 64.8% in the final quarter of 2015. This figure includes retail and consumer-to-consumer ecommerce where the sale occurred via mobile devices, in contrast to laptop or desktop computers.

eCommerce Traffic is 65% Mobile in the UK

We see a similar shift in the UK where mobile makes up 65% of all ecommerce traffic, according to a March 2016 report by SimilarWeb. The US comes in close with a 54% mobile traffic share in ecommerce.

What’s interesting is that while mobile takes a significant share of ecommerce traffic, users spend more time viewing merchant websites via desktop computers. In the UK and US for instance, desktop pageviews per visit are higher than mobile views.

This suggests that users spend a lot of time researching products before making a purchase. A mobile-optimized webstore is important.
